Notes:

According to the Virginia DOT, the first Dept. of Highways map was produced in 1926, although a tourist map was issued in 1922.

 

Virginia maps are known to exist with overprints. Examples of this are "Garden Club of Virginia" overprints on 1952 and 1958 maps, and "Civil Air Patrol" overprints on 1982-83 and 1991 maps. Other years no doubt exist as well.

 

The Civil War Centennial Maps of 1961, 1962 and 1964 contain the same highway map as the regular editions on one side. The reverse contains a Civil War Centennial Map rather than tourist photos. This variety probably exists for 1963 as well, but has not yet been confirmed.

 

In recent years, a smaller map titled "A Map of Scenic Roads in Virginia" has been issued by the Virginia DOT. These are not considered to be official state highway maps.
