Notes:

For many of the maps dated 1962-73, 92 & 93, it is difficult to tell which is the front cover, and which is the back. If only one side contains the date, that side is described. Otherwise, one side is chosen arbitrarily.

 

From 1914 to 1923, the map depicted only "State Reward Roads" (showing construction status). Maps issued from 1924 to 1927 were titled "Official Michigan Condition Map." Maps prior to 1927 were printed in very limited numbers each month. In 1927, the "Official Michigan Service Map" was introduced, which was issued 4 times a year until 1934. The first maps issued for the motoring public came in 1934. This information was supplied by the Michigan Dept. of Transportation.

 

1976-77 A was probably issued in 1976, while 1976-77 B was probably issued in 1977.

 

The two versions of the 1978-79 map also have one other difference, in addition to what is noted below. Version A includes two fake "towns" in Ohio, "goblu" and "beatosu", referring to the rivalry between the University of Michigan (Blue) and Ohio State University (OSU). These towns were eliminated from version B.

 

Since the Michigan Highway Dept. was founded in 1905 (1955 A contains 50th anniversary message), the 1980-81 A map was probably issued in 1980, while 1980-81 B was probably issued in 1981.

 

Information for many maps from the 1930s thru the 1950s was taken from photocopies provided by the Michigan Department of Transportation, and is therefore not necessarily complete. It is not known whether there is any way to distinguish the reprinted edtions of 1944 and 1994, which are reported by the Michigan DOT.
