CANADIAN GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL MAPS

Notes:

These maps were issued by the Canadian Government starting in what appears to be the early 1920’s. The names of the issuing agencies over the years are:

Natural Resources Intelligence Service (1920’s – 1930)

National Development Bureau (1931 – 193?)

Canadian Travel Bureau (1935? – 1940)

Canadian Government Travel Bureau (1941 – 1973)

Canadian Government Office of Tourism (1974 – 198?)

Government of Canada Tourism (1987? – ????)

These maps were done in sections or sheets and include the northern portions of the United States. Earlier issues appear to have been done as five separate maps—the entire country, the Pacific Sheet, the Middle West Sheet, the Great Lakes Sheet, and the Atlantic Sheet. A 1929 sheet on the Northwest Territories is also known to exist. In the 1930’s these maps were condensed to three separate maps—the Western Sheet, the Central Sheet, and the Eastern Sheet. In the 1940’s, the maps were further condensed to a single map with the Western Sheet on one side and the Eastern Sheet on the other side. In the mid-1970’s, they reverted back to two maps (Eastern and Western) for a short period of time.

The earlier maps were printed on one side only. Starting in the mid-1930’s, both sides were printed.

Prior to 1955, there is not a true cover. Maps were usually folded so that the legend was visible. The folded dimensions of these maps vary considerably, so the unfolded dimensions are given.
