Notes:
Both the Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the Division of Tourism publish maps of California, so there are two lists below. Most of the Caltrans maps are exceptionally hard to find (other than the 1966 B and C maps). It is believed that these maps were only printed for inclusion in the reports of the highway department, and not handed out to motorists. This theory is based on the 1960-62 maps, which state "Appendix to XXth Annual Report" on the cover. Also, several issues from the 1950s include a code for the quantity printed on the front cover, which number less than 20,000.

The early Caltrans maps contain a "List of Routes" or "List of State Highway Routes." The number of these routes listed are indicated below in parenthesis.

Caltrans maps from the 1930s through 1959 have one cover consisting of black and white text, and another cover with the same text, but a black and white photo of the state capitol building as well. Based on folding patterns, the text-only cover would probably be considered the front, but for the purposes of this list, the cover with the photo is described. An exception to this is the 1940 map, which contains photos on both covers - the usual photo of the capitol, and one of the governor.

The 1980 Tourism map has no explicit date, only two codes. Based on the Rand McNally code, it was published in 1980, but based on another code ("13279-309 4-81 250M OSP"), which may refer to an April 1981 printing date, it might be considered a 1981 map by some.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) also issued maps from the 1950s to the 1980s (maybe longer). These are not listed here.
