| RMCA - Summer 1995 Newsletter PreviewThe Conoco Touraide "The Conoco Travel Bureau, maintained by the Continental Oil Company, is America's foremost organization offering individualized travel service to all motorists absolutely free of charge," says a 1935 Conoco folder that describes their service, and the company worked hard to prove that it was true. All a motorist had to do in the early '30's was to send an application to Conoco Travel Bureau in Denver, Co, showing generally the trip that was planned, and Conoco would send a stack of maps of all the states through which the traveler would pass. Each was highlighted with a marking pen to show that portion of the trip that lay within that state. Also included would be travel booklets or folders describing the scenic wonders along the route, a directory of hotels and auto camps for each state, a windshield sticker and a "Conoco Passport" to use as an introduction to Conoco dealers along the way. But as fine as this service was, there were still problems; the main one being that motorists got too much information, too much paper to deal with. Thus, for 1936 Conoco redesigned the entire offering to the public, and the result was the Conoco Touraide. This was a spiral bound 12"x9" book of maps and touring information compiles in accordance with each applicant's proposed trip, with all the information required between 2 pale green covers that had requester's name written on the front. One 1936 Touraide states, "No longer need to tussle with bulky maps while speeding along the road--no longer need you contend with a car littered with maps, booklets, and directories. This booklet has been assembled for your INDIVIDUAL trip, and contains in a handy, compact form, full information covering your itinerary." ... General Drafting Date Codes ...
