| RMCA - Fall 2000 Newsletter PreviewEnco's Mapmakers The first road map for the Standard Oil Co. of N.J. was created by the General Drafting Co. in 1923.* Thus began a long relationship in which literally all of Esso's map needs were met by General Drafting. However, on May 12, 1961, Esso consolidated the Carter, Humble, Pate, and Oklahoma brands in the new Enco brand. But General Drafting was unable to provide for the full needs of the expanded coverage, particularly city maps. As a result, Enco distributed maps from a variety of mapmakers. GENERAL DRAFTING CO. When Enco came into existence, General Drafting had already produced state maps (plus Mexico) for Humble, Oklahoma, and Pate. These maps were re-branded as Enco. It took another year for General Drafting to provide new state maps for the former Carter territory (Gousha were used in 1961). An Oklahoma/Kansas map came in 1964 and an Iowa/Missouri map was drafted but never printed. But the need for city maps was never met. Only Austin/San Antonio, Dallas/Ft Worth, Chicago, Houston, and Milwaukee were ready in 1961. ... Letter to the Editor I am writing in response to the article on page one of the Summer 2000 issue of "The Legend." As much as I appreciate all of the work put into this effort by Tony Golda, I just don't feel that it is reasonably possible to develop a grading standard for road maps that we all agree to. Mr. Golda states that he "believe[s] that this article is the closest we have come to a consensus on this topic during the three years [of] following the discussions" (these discussions have primarily taken place on the roadmaps-l email discussion list).
